Rita and Digit Train with Hannah Esberger-Shepherd

When Rita Young-Jones heard she had won a lesson and presentation tips from leading dressage rider and trainer Hannah Esberger-Shepherd she was ecstatic.

Organised by Hannah’s sponsor Supreme Products™ and Equestrian Life magazine Rita travelled from Burbage in Leicestershire with her 16-year-old skewbald gelding for the training.

Rita and Digit have been together for 10 years and have competed in numerous unaffiliated Preliminary competitions qualifying for this year’s Petplan Regional Finals.

Hannah put the pair through their paces, providing valuable advice and encouraging Rita to ride Digit forward while maintaining a consistent contact.

Said Hannah: “Rita needs to provide clear instructions to Digit at all times, when she wants him to go forward and in a balanced rhythm she must ensure this happens and he reacts to her direction.

“He must move off the leg more quickly and generally be sharper and more reactive in all the movements, while at the same time maintaining balance and lightness.”

By giving with the hands, and combining both pressure and release, Rita began to develop a beautiful outline with Digit.

In the past Digit would bend his head slightly to the right when halting on the centre line but with this new outline and plenty of feel down the outside rein this was no longer an issue with both horse and rider quickly improving and gaining confidence to stretch themselves.

As Digit learned to move off the leg, Hannah asked Rita to put in some turns on the forehand to encourage softness and more flexibility.

Rita and Digit soon took on a completely different shape, thoroughly enjoying their lesson with Hannah.

Said Rita: “I had an amazing time with Hannah, the tips and advice were great and I am sure it will really help me over the next few months. I can’t believe the difference in the way that Digit was going after the lesson.”
Hannah also provided Rita with advice on presentation skills thanks to her sponsor Supreme Products.

As Digit is skewbald, Hannah explained the huge benefits of using Supreme Products Leg & Body Whitener to produce brilliant white socks.

Said Hannah: “As a coloured, Digit is already very eye-catching, but by using the Supreme Products Professional Collection he will be stunning.”

Great Yorkshire Show Win for Sam

Six-year-old Sam Walker proved a chip off the old block when he turned in a winning performance at the Great Yorkshire Show.

Riding Mirabelle P, Sam won the lead rein show hunter pony, when under the careful eye of producer and leader Katy Carter.

Mirabelle P looked immaculate with Supreme Products™ sponsored Katy producing the five-year-old to perfection. The 12hh pony's plaits were perfect, mane and tail were gleaming and the coat had an incredible shine. The sharks teeth gave the perfect finishing touch.

Said Kate: “For their first season together Sam and Mirabelle P have formed a great partnership. They really suit each other and it was great that all the family were at the show to support them.”

Mum and dad, Sarah and Robert Walker were at the ringside to watch Sam, who is having a brilliant first season.

With Robert currently out of action, he was delighted to be at the show to watch Sam follow in his footsteps and gain his first Great Yorkshire Show win.

Said Sarah: “We were all so pleased for Sam and Katy. Mirabelle P is proving a wonderful pony for Sam to learn on and winning at the Great Yorkshire Show is always a very special occasion.”

Mobi Washer V17 - IN THE WORDS OF VICTOR KIAM.....

.......‘I liked it so much, I bought the company.’ Well, I can’t profess to have his kind of money and be in a position to buy the company, but I can say that when I tried the Mobi Washer V17 portable pressure washer that I absolutely LOVED it!

I have to admit that I am one for a bit of a gadget, and being a bit of a nerd, I was very excited when the Mobi Washer arrived last week, promptly getting it on charge so that I could commence spraying anything in sight as soon as possible!

The V17 Washer can be charged either by mains or with an in-car cigarette lighter socket so this is really useful if you are out at a show or event and need to re-charge.

My willing assistant in my initial test was 10 year old Black Labrador, Basil (once I had managed to crowbar him off his sofa). Shopping List:

  • Basil, in need of some buffing, lathering and perfuming.
  • Mobi Washer V17
  • SUPREME PRODUCTS Blue Shampoo

The Mobi Washer V17 weighs around 7kg when empty. Once full of water it weighs around 20kg. It comes with a 3 metre spraying tube with a trigger spray that can be adjusted from a ‘mist’ spray to a stronger ‘stream.’  The trigger has one of those useful little latches on it so that if you are spraying for a long time then you can apply the latch and you don’t have to keep grasping the trigger. The washer is also supplied with a webbing carrying strap so can be strapped to your back if you are so inclined.

The unit itself is rugged and well-built and I think would easily stand being knocked, bumped or even kicked over. The handles are solid, of moulded plastic and ‘pimpled’ so will not slip, even with wet hands.

I found filling the machine really easy as I turned the water tank approx 60 degrees anti-clockwise from the base and the tank unclicked and came away from the base, making it easy and lightweight to take it to the sink or tap to fill. Once full (Basil was treated to warm water), it simply clicks back in to place then I attached the hose and was ready to go.

Basil, I have to admit, was tied with his leader to a fence post as I didn’t particularly relish the idea of chasing him around the garden! I started by using the mist spray and this got good coverage of his somewhat rotund body in a matter of a minute or so. The unit does emit a ‘hum’ when water is being pressurised through the hose but as soon as the trigger is released the humming stops, but it’s not a loud noise by any stretch of the imagination.

We got good coverage for damping down, lathered and soaped up then began rinsing. I would say that I rinsed for a good 9 – 10 minutes. The pressure remained steady and I didn’t use all the water in the reservoir. I adjusted the water through the trigger from mist to stream and back again and got a good rinsing of his coat and my willing assistant seemed happy throughout the whole process!

5 Stars! *****

I think the Mobi Washer is an absolutely great idea. My preference definitely will be the washer that is fully portable (The V17)  that can be charged when on the move. It can be used for shampooing and cleaning, rinsing (and cooling) down legs, for example, after hunting, eventing or strenuous exercise. Don’t forget, this is a unit that also has a myriad of uses around the home – washing bikes, muddy boots, muddy kids, dogs et al. My neighbour has her eye on it for cleaning her patio and yes, I admit, I did water the hanging baskets with it……..

And in the memory of Victor Kiam (for anyone old enough to remember his cheesy adverts), whilst I cannot afford to buy the company, I liked the product so much that we have become Mobi Washer’s latest stockist in the UK!

And to celebrate this new item being added to our website, we are offering free delivery and a free bottle of Supreme Products shampoo along with your purchase - make your choice when ordering. To see more information, click here.

And as for Basil? Groomed to perfection, looking and smelling wonderful and worn out from all the excitement......!

Deanwater Success for Simon Charlesworth

The prestigious £1,000 to the winner Deanwater Hotel Supreme Ridden Show Horse Championship at the North of England Summer Show proved a huge success for Supreme Products™ sponsored Simon Charlesworth and Military Crisis.

Looking immaculate and turned out to perfection, the liver chestnut small riding horse, owned by Tonya Teasdale looked in superlative form throughout.

Now in his third season, Military Crisis and Simon have qualified for the Horse of the Year Show for the last two years and also took the Small Riding Horse class, and reserve champion title at the Royal International Horse Show in 2009.

Said Simon: “It was brilliant to win the Deanwater. It was a very strong championship and as the individual show is freestyle it allows you to be a bit creative.

“I was stood in the line-up working out my show and decided to get on and off Military Crisis as part of the display. I certainly think that helped me to clinch the championship.

“With the sun shining he looked fantastic. His coat gleamed with the help of some of our favourite show ring products and he really showed himself off.”

Supreme Products Winner, Moira, Enjoys Lesson with Hannah Esberger-Shepherd

Moira Richardson was the lucky winner of the Supreme Products™ competition to win a lesson and turnout tips with top dressage rider and trainer Hannah Esberger-Shepherd in Just Dressage.

Retford-based, Moira took along her nine-year-old, Vrayadien who she has owned for 11 months.

After allowing Vrayadien to settle in to her new home and routine they have recently started their competition partnership in good form, winning their first unaffiliated Elementary test at Sheepgate.

Known in the stable as Addy, Moira’s aim with the talented warmblood is to gain a place on the Northern Team at next year’s Inter-Regional competitions.

The mare, who has a natural flare for dressage, is by ‘Grivaldi’ and they look set for a great future together with Hannah complimenting them on their natural style and the level of skill they have already achieved together.

Hannah began the lesson by assessing Moira and Addy, noticing that the mare was blocking the left hand side and therefore not in the correct contact.

Hannah explained that Addy must not rely on the left rein and if the rein is given to her she must not fall out through her shoulder. This problem was worked on by doing plenty of leg yielding exercises throughout the lesson.

With many years experience training and riding, Hannah also noticed that Addy was a bit slow behind, and strong on the forehand.

Explained Hannah: “Addy needs to be lighter and softer in the hand. By working on transitions she will become softer and develop a more balanced shape overall.”

The pair then progressed to canter work which highlighted similar areas to improve on.

Working on 15 metre circles soon helped with the softness and plenty of left leg was needed on the girth to encourage Addy to flex and then relax.

Moira learnt to work the mare through her body to improve her suppleness when in canter.

By working on the left rein and correcting her stiffness Moira was given plenty to work on. Hannah gave valuable advice to correct Addy leaning on Moira by simply stopping her when she did this.

Later Hannah explained that Moira needed to get Addy to work her muscles up through her back to enable her to be more engaged. Moira’s homework was to work on the hind quarters and try to improve the canter work.

After the lesson Hannah explained the importance of turnout and presentation when in the dressage arena.

Hannah is sponsored by Supreme Products and uses the Professional Collection in preparation for and when at a competition.

Said Hannah: “The range from Supreme Products is fantastic. It really helps you to catch the judges’ attention and makes it so much easier for you to look immaculate when in the arena, by using products that have been specially developed for plaiting manes, shampooing horses and adding the finishing touches.

“Supreme Products highlighters such as Glistening Oil, Sparkle and Spray & Shine really add those finishing touches.”
