Top Tips for preventing Mud Fever!

Mud Fever - what is it?

Mud Fever occurs during the wet winter months and is principally caused by the bacteria Dermatophilus Congolensis. This is a form of dermatitis that affects the skin on the heel, fetlock and pastern. All horses can be affected, but particularly those with long hair around the fetlock are at risk. Back legs are more prone to mud fever than front legs and horses with thin skin, white heels or a lot of feather are also more likely to be susceptible to the condition.

Inflammation of the skin and underlying tissues leads to the skin swelling, stretching and weeping; cracks appearing, the hair falling out and hard scabs forming.

Horses exposed to a muddy environment or those that are kept in a dirty or unsatisfactory condition are more susceptible to Mud Fever. It can be a time-consuming and difficult condition to treat, with efforts to manage the symptoms often frustrated when the owner has no choice but to turn horses back out into the field or paddock that aggravated the condition in the first place.

How to prevent Mud Fever:

Although it is not possible to guarantee complete protection, half the battle lies in effective preventive treatment.

• To try to prevent mud fever, keep your horses' legs as clean and dry as possible.

• Hosing should not cause problems, providing the legs are dried thoroughly afterwards – using a hairdryer can often be the most effective way!

• Horses with thin skin, white heels or a lot of feather are likely to be more susceptible to the condition. If horses are turned out, it is advisable to keep their feathers clipped. Clip them – don’t shave them.

• Stable the horse on clean bedding and provide good living conditions.

• Use a topical barrier cream such as Supreme Products Leg & Mud Guard on clean, dry legs or underside of the belly prior to turnout or exercise.

• Try using waterproof leg wraps for turnout or exercise

The Symptoms

If you are not able to prevent mud fever, you need to know how this can be combated. One of the first things, however, is to be able to recognise the condition. The signs of mud fever are fairly classic and easy to recognise, with the distribution of the lesions being most prominent and visible in the areas that have been subjected to the wettest conditions.

• Matted areas of hair containing crusty scabs

• Small, circular, ulcerated, moist lesions beneath scabs

• Thick, creamy, white, yellow or greenish discharge between the skin and overlying scab

• The scab, once removed, often has the hair roots protruding

• Deep fissures in the skin

• Eventual hair loss leaving raw-looking, inflamed skin underneath

• Heat, swelling and pain if pressure is applied to the limb or the limb is flexed or stretched

• Lameness

• If severely affected, lethargy, depression and loss of appetite

How to Combat Mud Fever

• Remove the scabs to treat the skin, but be aware that doing this forcibly could aggravate the surrounding tissue and be painful as well as creating discomfort. Use Supreme Products Horse Care Cream to soften the scabs so they fall away naturally.

• Prevent skin from coming into further contact with wet or muddy earth while the condition is being treated. Horses should be stabled on clean, dry bedding and should not be allowed to stand in damp bedding or litter.

• When the scabs have been removed, shampoo your horses’ legs with Supreme Products Medicated Shampoo from the Horse Care Range to fight the bacteria. Make sure, once rinsed, that you dry the legs thoroughly.

• Immunise your horse against Tetanus.

• Consult your vet if the symptoms persist as antibiotics may be required.

• Try to avoid turnout in very damp conditions, use a ménage if you have one or turn out in a well-drained paddock.

• Use Supreme Products Leg & Mud Guard as a barrier cream to try to prevent further occurrences.

Brilliant HOYS for Team SUPREME PRODUCTS®

TEAM Supreme Products riders and producers were in championship winning mood over the five days of the 2010 Horse of the Year Show.

Robert Walker started the winning roll when heading the TopSpec Middleweight Show Hunter of the Year section with Jill Day’s beautifully turned out, seven-year-old bay gelding Pride and Joy.

Going through to the championship, held during the evening performance, Robert and PJ, as he is known at home, continued to impress the judges Chris McGrann and Kath Barley when going on to take the Show Hunter Championship to everyone’s delight.

Meanwhile in the Caldene Arena, Sarah Challinor and the seven-year-old stallion, Pumphill Buckthorn, owned by Mrs S Hughes, first won the Dartmoor, Exmoor and Shetland section of the Mace Group Mountain and Moorland Pony of the Year, before going on to stand champion to much excitement.

The red rosettes and championship sashes continued on the second day with championships going to Team Hollings, Simon Charlesworth of the Stanley Grange Show Team and Sarah Challinor.

Having already taken the Mace Group Mountain and Moorland Pony of the Year on the first day, Sarah’s success with the Dartmoor stallion, Pumphill Buckthorn continued when heading the Thistledown Mountain & Moorland Working Hunter Pony of the Year after winning the ponies not exceeding 122cm section earlier in the day.

Following a very successful season, the large hack, Royal Angel, ridden by Michaela Wood and produced by Team Hollings looked a picture. Winning his section, Royal Angel then went on to take the Topham Barnes Hack of the Year Championship in another prestigious finale.

To round off an amazing day, Simon Charlesworth and the Stanley Grange Show Team then made it through to the evening performance with Mr and Mrs Parkin’s Catwalk after winning the Cuddy Supreme In-Hand Horse Championship.

Against his father Alan, winner of the pony section with Scallywag II, Simon and the lovely bay mare looked magnificent under the spotlight, shining to perfection and continuing to wow the judges to take to the overall Cuddy In-Hand Championship.

Rounding off a hugely successful Horse of the Year Show for Supreme Products team riders and producers, Peter Emmerson and the Lead Rein Show Hunter Pony, Charn Secret Legend captured the Supreme Pony of the Year title on the final evening of the 2010 show.

Owned by Keren Fuge and ridden by her eight-year-old daughter, Abbie, the five-year-old, Charn Secret Legend trotted down the centre line looking a million dollars with a very proud Peter taking his first ever Supreme Pony title.

Said Peter’s wife Claire: “This is just amazing, in 40 years of showing lead reins, this is the first time Peter has been down the centre line himself.  He keeps threatening to retire but after this I don’t think he will.”

After winning the Show Hunter of the Year on Jill Day’s, Pride & Joy II on the first day of HOYS, Robert Walker’s success continued when heading the Heavyweight Cob of the Year on Starry Night, owned by Camilla Neame.

Team Hollings success also continued after taking the Hack of the Year with Royal Angel earlier in the week, the team went on to win the Charlotte Morgan Riding Pony of the Year exceeding 138cms and not exceeding 148cms section with Crafton Touch of Gold, ridden by Alice Greenwood and owned by Mrs L Fitzgerald.

Katy Carter and daughter Poppy came home with a second in the Mini Lead Rein Show Pony and fifth in the First Ridden with five-year-old Lowland Toy Soldier, owned by Jason Lindley.

While Gill Thompson’s, Stoke yard finished third in the 13hh HOYS Show Hunter Pony with Parkhills Ronaldo, ridden by Daisy Cambray and owned by Julie Cambray and third in the Intermediate Show Hunter of the Year with Jemoon Starcatcher, ridden by Yasmin Kobbe and owned by Gina Kobbe – returning a very successful HOYS 2010 for all the team.

Back to Business for Hannah!

Jamie, Molly and I got back from a lovely relaxing holiday two weeks ago. We had a great time spending some quality together.

Now it is back to the yard and back to the horses. I have been busy working the horses and I have really felt the stiffness in my muscles. It is funny how soon they forget how to work don't they?

We have been to Field House at Uttoxeter with Belluga and Vanita.  Belluga won both the Medium classes and Vanita won the Advanced Medium. Unlike me the break did the boys good and both have now qualified for these levels.

We are going to try our hand at 'Music'. Belluga will compete in the Medium and Welkom in the Elementary. Belluga is using his original Elementary music so on Monday we had to convert our test to a medium floor pattern. This can often be a task, but it just fell together.

We hope that is a good sign! Catch the next update to see how we get on.
